An update on “Is Barack Obama a Christian?”

April 16, 2009

During the presidential campaign, Obama made a big deal of his conversion to “Christianity.” Andy Martin asks, “When was Obama baptized? No one knows.” (Note: The question of his baptism is only of interest because Barack Obama made such a conspicuous issue of his religious beliefs.)

Obama’s baptism: an update

Update to “Is Barack Obama a Christian?”

(NEW YORK)(April 16, 2009) On Easter Sunday I posted a column “Is Barack Obama a Christian?” (Please go back and read it for full context.) We got some replies that questioned whether my claim that Holy Baptism was the entry point to Christianity was correct. In particular, I pointed out Obama has never issued a baptismal date or explained when he was actually baptized. I also pointed out that many Christian churches made a big deal of maintaining baptismal records.

Obviously, religious denominations within Christianity differ widely on baptism.

However, with a little research I found a church that is proud to keep baptismal and marriage records going back to 1835:

St. Bartholomew’s also states a clear view on Baptism (same link):

HOLY BAPTISM is the sacrament by which one becomes a Christian and a member of the Church. All ministry originates in baptism. Therefore, living out one’s baptism is at the heart of our life together.
The Episcopal Church defines baptism as “full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ’s Body, the Church” (Book of Common Prayer, p. 298), and recognizes as valid any baptism administered with water and in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Baptism is an event of primary significance and celebration not just for the individual but for the whole church. Baptisms are offered throughout the year on specific Sundays and at the Easter Vigil. Preparation is offered regularly in anticipation of Baptism Sundays.

Maybe president Obama should tell us when he was baptized if he wants to claim he is a Christian.

Baptism is a ceremony that takes place one time only, in a few minutes, and on a particular date. (Baptism is NOT the same as an altar call.)

If Obama was baptized, there is a record of it at Trinity Church where it was allegedly performed by Rev. Wright.

This ceremony is a BIG DEAL and there would be a record.

I am sceptical if there is no record about Obama’s honesty.

A phone call to the church should be able to identify the date.

Why has this not been done?

Obama’s staff should clear this up IMMEDIATELY, since this question undermines Obama’s credibility.

If Obama was never baptized, it takes a few minutes.

  3. Thinking about this today and found this on the Daily Beast,

“His baptism presents its own problems. The senior pastor at Trinity at the time of Obama’s baptism was the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr.,…”

That is what this author is reporting.
